Maryn Varbanov is the forerunner of modern tapestry art and a man that is innovative in using new space conception, techniques, and materials to create tapestry art. He also made a positive contribution to the tapestry art communication between China and foreign countries. The artwork Byzantine (拜占庭) was created in 1979. By adopting the traditional material and weaving techniques, and by borrowing the traditional motif of design, the artist created an image which possesses features of Yugoslavian nationalities and modernism.
