Hardly anything is known about the life of the Roman poet Valerius Flaccus (died before 90 AD). He dedicated his only surviving work, the epic “Argonautica”, to Emperor Vespasian. The work took up the material of the saga of the Argonauts, enriching it through the addition of further narrative elements. Although it has not survived completely (or was never completed), the epic was extremely popular, as many commentators and highly attractive print editions prove. The Paris edition by Bade in 1519 stands out for its eight magnificent (coloured) woodcuts and complex initials as well as the extensive comments by Gilles de Maizières (in Latin Aegidius Maserius).
