Herter Brothers was among the leading design firms of the Aesthetic period, creating elaborate, unified interiors for an elite clientele. The firm combined Gustav Herter's skill at cabinetmaking and marquetry with the artistic vision and entrepreneurial skills of his brother Christian. Gustav Herter skillfully ornamented his cabinets and chairs with pictures made from different kinds and shades of wood (such as the flowers and dragonflies on this cabinet's doors). Christian Herter designed wallpaper, lighting fixtures, metalwork, and textiles to complement his brother's elaborate furniture.
