In his "Tappeto-Natura," Gilardi aimed to create a reflection of nature in an artificial and idealized aesthetic object, delivering a scene at once representative of reality, yet removed from it. This artwork is one removed from his daily life, the cocoa plant being a sweet, tropical fruit, displayed alongside other examples of exotic flora and fauna, like the papaya and Mexican armadillo.
