Calabash Bowl

Handmade calabash bowl of Kou wood. The bowl was broken at one time (before it having been given to FDR) and mended according to the ancient Hawaiian method of patching with other pieces of wood. Metal plaque adhered to the side and reads, "PRESENTED / TO / President Franklin D. Roosevelt / BY / HAWAII STATE CHAPTER / DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION / HONOLULU / TERRITORY OF HAWAII / 1934." Bowl is originally from the village of Keauhou, a Hawaiian village on the west side of the island of Hawaii, the birthplace of King Kamehameha III. The bowl came from the collection of a Dr. Westervelt of Honolulu, Hawaii and was presented to FDR in 1934 by the Hawaii State Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Honolulu, T.H. (Territory of Hawaii) on the occasion of his visit to the islands. FDR Library Museum Collection, MO 1941.8.13.
