California Redwood Park, 1915

This painting was displayed in the second year of the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal and the rebuilding of San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake and fire. This is one of Hill's finest paintings. California Redwood Park was later renamed Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Standing at the base of the redwood tree are the female members of the McPherson family and seated to the right is Carrie Stephens Walter, who worked alongisde Hill in the successful effort to acquire Big Basin. The McPherson family owned the Santa Cruz Sentinel and were influential in the drive to save the redwoods. On display at the Andrew P. Hill House, History Park.
