  • Further Information: Traditionally known as 'Lord Carlisle and his Sister', but this identification cannot be confirmed. Fairfax Murray recalled that when the 9th Earl of Carlisle (d.1911) saw the picture he thought it represented 'the [3rd] building earl & his sister but was doubtful about it after. Anyway there is (or was) a printed label on the back, the girls name I think was Katherine but am not sure. I have never taken the trouble to catalogue my own pictures.' The children appear to be a girl under five and a boy under three years old, but no recorded children of the Howards of Castle Howard fit these approximate ages and the date of the portrait.
