Many of Da Vinci’s inventions were never created during his lifetime and only created by interested historians quite recently. However Da Vinci’s canal locking system is an invention that was not only immediately adopted but can still be found in use around the world today. The canal lock is ingenious in its simplicity. Due to the angle the planks are set on the water’s own weight prevents it from travelling through. As the water presses against the lock the opening presses tighter together, creating a strong seal. Although the weight of the water was pressing the lock closed, the device is easy to open as people were not working against gravity.
