Museo de Jaén

Museo de Jaén
Jaén, Spain

CE/DA03104. Composite capital dated to the Caliphate and carved in white marble. Despite its fragmentary state, the capital preserves the elements characteristic of this sort of piece. The echinus presents a cavetto profile and four volutes, some of which are almost entirely lost. The abacus includes a longitudinal band and one which is quadrangular in section.Often, the inscriptions were carved into these bands, but in this case this
capital was made without it. The echinus rests on a classic decorative motif which consists of two beads and an oval. Below this, the capital is divided into two levels, which are now lost. The piece is profusely decorated with vegetal motifs, including ribs, acanthus leaves and flowers on the volutes.
