During both World Wars, airplane spotting cards taught enlisted men and civilians alike to recognize both friendly and enemy aircraft. The cards evolved, very likely, from larger plane recognition posters used for military training. The tradition of making these cards held on even during peacetime. In more contemporary times, manufacturers make standard card decks marked with the same plane silhouettes and information. They are a nod toward nostalgia and the collectible card market.
