The portrait depicts a woman called Carmen Rodríguez de Gaitán (1777-1852) who actively participated in the independence movement. During the restoration of the Spanish Monarchy, led by the general Pablo Morillo, she was banished to Tocaima and recieved a death penalty. After the victory of the republican army in Boyacá her charges were withdrawn.
