Carquejeiras’ Walkway (Fontaínhas)

This steep walkway is situated in the Fontaínhas area between the Infante and Luiz I bridges. The name Carquejeiras’ Walkway derives from the activity of women in days gone by who carried on their heads huge amounts of carqueja (a herb-like plant), unloaded from the boats docked at the quayside.
