Garibaldi, now an older man and not in good health, could no longer ride horseback, so he used this carriage instead when travelling around Italy to take part in demonstrations. He then donated it to Vittorio Emanuele II. In 1897 Garibaldi's widow Francesca Armosino donated it to the City of Turin.
