Catlett is shown here with Target (ca. 1955, High Museum of Art), the predecessor to Amistad Research Center's Target Practice (1970). This first iteration of the image with its strong directional line at the brow and planar references reflects several influences including that of Ossip Zadkine, Catlett’s former teacher who introduced her to Cubism; Catlett's study of Pre-Columbian, terracotta sculpture with Francisco Zúñiga; and Catlett’s enthusiasm for African masking.
