The architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg, who was commissioned with the planning and management, designed a building in the style of English country houses according to the ideas of the crown prince and princess. He was inspired by the cottage style of the Gelbensande hunting lodge, the estate of crown princess Cecilie's parents. The exterior facades are characterised by brick and half-timbered elements made of dark oak. The Tudor-style chimneys, each of which is individually designed, are particularly striking. The various parts of the building are arranged around five inner courtyards: the central courtyard of honour, the Prince's Garden as a small garden courtyard and three further service courtyards.
