Pedro Weingärtner was born in a family of German immigrants who settled in Rio Grande do Sul around 1836. At the age of 7, his family founded a small lithography workshop and the young artist began to take his first drawing lessons with his father. Because of the early death of the patriarch of the family, in 1867, Weingärtner began to work in other offices to guarantee his family's support. At the age of 18, he met and took painting classes with Delfim da Câmara. With 24 years old, he decided to study in Europe. In 1878 he studied in Hamburg and Baden and at the age of 27 enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Throughout this period in Germany and later in France, the artist maintained close contact with Brazil, sending works and receiving scholarships and grants. At the age of 34, he returned to Brazil and held his first exhibition in Porto Alegre. In 1881 he became a professor at the National School of Fine Arts, where he remained until 1893. Until his death in 1926, he participated in several exhibitions, mainly in Porto Alegre.
