After 1850 the elongated brims of poke bonnet hats become shorter and the head portion more flat. Little bonnets seated on the back of the head become fashionable. The short brim is drawn down over five wires into a front of scalloped lace, the flat back is adorned in a double bow, with a short bavolet flounce in the back. The silk taffeta is fully mounted on coarse stiff mesh tulle.
