During the 1930s, much of Los Angeles' original Chinatown was demolished in order to build Union Station. In 1937, the Los Angeles Chinatown Project Association, galvanized by community leader Peter Soo Hoo Sr., raised funds to acquire, design and construct New Chinatown's Central Plaza, which opened to the public on June 25, 1938.
