Chabento is a portable tea set for having tea and food outdoors. It consists of two chests that were hung at both ends of a pole when they were carried by a servant.
This Chabento has a gold maki-e design of the Aoi crest of the Tokugawa family and an arabesque pattern on the black lacquer background. It stores tea bowls, Tenmoku-style tea stands, tea caddies, boxes for food and a set of a silver water jar and heater.
