Until a few decades ago, Kuélap looked like a heap of ruins hidden by the Amazonian Forest in Peru and was only known to local deer hunters and a few scholars.
However, little by little the extraordinary archeological site has been cleared of vegetation and some buildings have even been rebuilt. The buildings show how the Chachapoya people lived many centuries ago at about 3000 meters above sea level.
Conservation concerns about the stability of the roofs of these buildings have now changed reconstruction protocols which try to maintain the integrity of the site, without artificially recreating the buildings.
