The Chaparral 2E was based on the aluminum Chevrolet chassis and presented Jim Hall's theories about aerodynamics at the1966 CanAm championship. The 2E became practically the basis for all the competition cars built since then. From the rear of the car emerged a large wing that rested directly on the suspensions. The wing was like that of an airplane, but it had the inverted profile to create downforce and it was anchored to the hubs to further load the tires and guarantee better grip in the corners. A conduit then let air through the bonnet and above the car, generating an additional downforce. The pedal that allowed the control of the opening angle of the wing was in place of the clutch pedal in normal cars with manual gear-change. Besides adjusting the wing, the pedal also acted on the air conduit: for the straights, pressing it, the conduit was closed and the resistance to progress decreased. When the pedal was completely released, on the contrary, the conduit opened and the rear wing was angled to offer the maximum downforce. The design was very innovative, but soon the adjustable wings were banned by the FIA and so Jim Hall had to fall back on a fixed non-adjustable wing. Within a few years, every racing car, even Formula 1, would have mounted ailerons on long shock absorbers, although many were not comparable to those designed by Hall; their structural failures, in fact, caused serious accidents that led the various organizing sports commissions to limit or even prohibit them
