Charcoal is still produced in Transylvania as it has been for hundreds of years. A heap of wood (smaller pieces of lower economic value) is made, and covered with earth and then straw and then more earth again. This is to allow burning of the wood without air: so that charcoal is prepared by burning. This is a labour-intensive but sustainable way of producing charcoal.
