Cheese basket

Cheese basket made of birch roots, vieddek. You pull up small birches, which have grown on mossy ground and try to get as long and thin roots as possible. These are placed in warm water and split into two halves, of which all possible utensils are made, e.g. larger and smaller baskets, bread baskets, seed baskets, even whole baskets. In Jokkmokk, the forest Sami of the Buldan family in Mörtberg (Sami Sieskan) were especially skilled in this handicraft. Making things from roots is called "kåtet" in Sami, which also means weaving.
