In the 1800's, angled ceramic cheese dishes, or cheese bells, became one of the most common ways to keep cheese from spoiling. It remained popular in most households until the introduction of the home refrigerator in 1913. Perhaps Mrs. Lynde kept her prized cheese in a Rose-Pattern ceramic when not taking it to the exhibition!
