This chest is one of the earliest surviving pieces of furniture from the Georgia Piedmont. Chests over drawers are sometimes referred to as “mule chests.” Rather than being named after the animal, they may take their name from the type of shoe called a mule. The drawer at the bottom may have stored these slip-on shoes.
