Chestnut Circle

Andy Goldsworthy: “At first I used only windfallen leaves, relying on the wind and frost to provide materials. I have been in woods after a hard frost in autumn with trees noisily shedding leaves as the sun rose. There is a strangeness in leaves collapsing to the ground on a calm day, unlike the wind that can rip the leaves away from the tree….Trees have taught me most. The biggest lesson being that so much can be found in something common and ordinary.” [Goldsworthy, 1989]

Chestnut Circle is held together with small twigs from the chestnut tree, threaded through chestnut leaves, which have then dried and contracted. No glue or bonding agent has been used.
