The attribution of this painting is uncertain, once attributed to Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the work also bears similarities to that of Henri-Pierre Danloux (1753–1809), who established a reputation as an informal portraitist skilled at capturing natural, spontaneous poses of families and children. Although the identity of the artist and subject cannot be proven, it is possible that this late 18th-century portrait represents Fragonard’s son, Alexandre Evarist Fragonard (1780-1850).
