The first edition, "Conversations-Lexikon mit vorzüglicher Rücksicht auf die gegenwärtigen Zeitende" was published in Leipzig in 1796-1808.
Parallel to other encyclopedias of the eighteenth century, its scope as a dictionary was extended, seeking to be more comprehensive by including geography, history, biographies, as well as the most typical themes of mythology, philosophy, natural history and others.
During the nineteenth century, 13 editions were published, with short articles, considered reliable and excellent, especially in German subjects. Currently, it is the most extensive German-language encyclopedia published in the 21st century.
