Shieh's favourite way of dealing with his subject matter is to present a narrative with human figures. In this portrayal of actor Chow Yun-fat, Shieh has put on display paper-doll-like figures of Chow in his many movie roles, tracing his career that spans thirty years and took him from Hong Kong to Hollywood. At the same time, it reminds the viewer of the spread and influence of Hong Kong popular culture. In a clever use of acrylic and collage of prints while keeping the gongbi style, the artist demonstrates how appearance and image-making, viz. conscious dressing and deliberation, can project different nuances of meanings.
