Lucas van Leyden, a younger contemporary of Durer with a talent that rivaled the older artist's, also enjoyed great fame in his lifetime. The two seem to have enjoyed a mutual admiration, since it is recorded that they exchanged collections of each other's prints when they met in the Netherlands in 1521. Lucas, like Durer, was known for his original choice of subjects, but his engravings display a more delicate tone and a softer atmosphere than Durer's. His work was also highly prized by both collectors and other artists.
