This picture was painted by Willmann at the age of 71. Similarly to the works of Rembrandt, this is an intimate version of the biblical event, reflecting the personal emotional interest of the artist. The eye is drawn to the impressive masterly study of the athletic body of Christ streaked with blood, with greenish-brown shadows delicately shaping the front, while a burning fire hidden behind the figure casts reddish reflexes along the outlines of His legs and arms. The face of the Messiah, enveloped in a subtle glow, attracts attention with its concentrated and calm look. The painting has been acclaimed as one of the best works of the greatest Baroque painter in Silesia.
