Christ on the Cross between weeping cherubim

Giovanni Battista RovedataFirst quarter of the 17th century

Museo Diocesano Tridentino
Trento, Italy

The use of simplified, austere and unadorned composite plans is a sign of the new climate of formal control on art performed by the Church in the Counter-Reformation period, as clearly shown by this small Crucifix of unknown provenance but destined for private devotion.
In this kind of representation, every narrative characteristic is abandoned to invite greater focus on the Christ dead on the cross, isolated at the center of the composition that has no weeping figures.
The scene is pervaded by strong pathetic accents capable of generating the most ardent devotion in the faithful.
