The interior of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is a Latin cross, with three naves divided by pillars. The hemispherical domes with lanterns at the intersection of the transept and the chapels of the side aisles are very interesting. The church is unique in the entire Ragusa area for the organic fusion of architectural elements, stuccoes, gilding and frescoes. The frescoes are made by Olivio Sozzi, considered as one of the most interesting pictorial cycles in the area. The artist illustrates the whole Christian history, showing the main aspects and characters of the old and new Testaments.
