The journey to the afterlife is another popular subject-matter in funerary art although it is rendered in varying degree of detail. The single equestrian himself is also used for the depiction of the journey to the afterlife. On the left side of another, later limestone box from Chiusi, the deceased walks towards the right and holds his horse by the reigns with his left hand. There are two small trees behind the horse. This succinctly narrated scene reveals a relatively liberal use of the iconographic elements of the journey to the afterlife: The horseman does not ride on his horse but leads the animal. Also, the final destination of the journey is not explicitly depicted. However, against the background of the existing iconography it is clear that here, too, the transition to the underworld is narrated.
