City Candy is among the most notable pieces in American painter and sculptor Pierre Clerk's ouvre, and among the most prominent and recognizable structures in Toledo. Clerk is well known for working a style that crosses boundaries between painting and sculpture, and lists City Candy as one of two major installations (along with the New York Public Art Council's Waterside Plaza" in 1977) that led to an evolution in scale and monumentality in his practice. The distinct red and white coloring of the sculpture has undergone several repaintings over its 40-year lifespan and continues to be well known for its vivid peppermint stripes and distinct geometry.
