Belonged to Captain Henry Clay Gorrell, an officer in the North Carolina Guilford County Guilford Grays. A note that accompanied the coat reads, “On May 5, 1860 H.C.G., wearing this Philadelphia-made frock coat, delivered a formal speech as he accepted a blue silk company flag from Edgeworth Female Seminary students. The Grays, organized five months before, marched from the County courthouse to the Seminary for May Day festivities.
