Claw beakers like this one have been found in richly provisioned men’s and women’s graves, and identify the occupants as members of the elite. They were produced from the mid-5th to the 7th century in Frankish glassworks between the lower Rhine, the Meuse and the Moselle, using a particularly sophisticated technique. The glassmaker first attached droplets of hot glass to the outer surface of the cooled beaker, then pressed the vessel wall outward at these points and pulled the glass downward creating hollow tubes, the ends of which were then attached to the vessel wall.
