Clock with chinoiseries

Du Paquier factory1725

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

This table clock, which an inscription shows was made in 1725, has a number of decorative elements that combine a pagoda, Foo dogs, and dragons with more Baroque elements like putti, cornices, and broad folded leaves at the top. This is a rare early example of the sophisticated work that came from the Du Paquier factory in Vienna. Founded in 1718 by the court official Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, the factory initially employed workers from Meissen, and soon achieved the highest levels of quality.
