In early 1900s Australia surfing was a new phenomenon done by very few people, but one way it soon started making its way into the broader public consciousness was through advertising. Cobra boot polish was made in Sydney from around 1909, with a series of cartoon ads for the product featuring a character named Chunder Loo appearing in the leading weekly magazine The Bulletin until 1920. The artwork for this ad was done by Lionel Lindsay, older brother of famed Australian artist and author Norman Lindsay.
