Taiwania cryptomerioides is as vulnerable as the giant panda. In the wild these trees can live for 1,600 years and reach a height of over 60 m, towering above the surrounding tree canopy. This tree is native to China, Myanmar, Taiwan and Vietnam. Its timber is highly valued as it is light, durable and has a pleasant spicy scent. Logging, forest clearance and poor regeneration have led to a major decline in the number of trees in recent decades.
