The coin has a head of Athena in left
profile on the obverse. The goddess is
wearing a helmet decorated with an
olive branch and a disk shaped earring.
Her straight nose is an extension of her
eyebrows, her eyes are almond shaped
and her lips are full. On the reverse inside
the quadratum incusum is an owl, the
symbol of Athena, with its head shown
frontally. Above left is an olive branch
and crescent motif. In the space at the left
is the legend ΑΘΕ, referring to the city of
Athens.
The coin is a tetradrachm. This coin was
minted by the city of Athens in 480-479
BC to commemorate the victory against
the Persians (see Tekin 1997a, pl. 1, fig. 10;
Gür 1976, pls. IX-XII, figs. 158-225).
