Collapse into Abstract [White]

Charlotte Cullinan and Jeanine Richards have worked together since 1998, originally under the collaborative name Artlab. 'Collapse into Abstract [White'], 2008-2010, explores the artists' interest in the breakdown of a figuration into abstraction. The image of the diving horse and rider functions as pure gesture, plunging into blatant materiality and abstracted form. The sports pages from newspapers attached to the frame and arranged on the floor connect to the moment of the making of the piece, situating the idea of painting as a gesture and the result of a kind of performance.
