Luca Signorelli's "Weeping Woman's Head" is a fragment of a larger painting depicting the Deposition, originally made for the church of St. Augustine in Matelica. This piece comes from the collection of the neoclassical painter Pelagio Palagi, who assembled a vast collection of objects from different periods and civilizations, reflecting his broad interest in culture and art. Upon his death in 1860, Palagi gifted this collection to his birthplace, Bologna. The Palagi collection became the foundation for the city's civic museums.
