London, United Kingdom

On his pig farm near Hull, Rick Buckle uses different-coloured clothing and tools in each of his pigs’ sheds, preventing bacteria from being transferred on workers between groups of animals. By doing this he can prevent cross-infection and contain outbreaks of disease much more effectively, using fewer antibiotics. While the European Union has strict regulations on antibiotic use in agriculture, many countries such as the United States use antibiotics very widely on farms.
