STOCKHOLM, Sweden

In the aftermath of the death of King Gustav II Adolf Sweden thought it expedient to negotiate for peace with the kingdom Poland-Lithuania in order to focus on the war against the Habsburg Imperial armies. The various Polish-Swedish wars in the 16th and 17th Centuries were pars of a dynastic struggle between two lines of the Vasa dynasty. The peace of Stuhmdorf, as this medal commemorates, lasted just over 26 years.
The reverse side of the medal commemmorating the treaty shows the godesses Pax (peace) and Iustitia (law/order) embracing. Between the two stands two tablets in shape referring to the Ten Commandments. Interestingly the words DEO PROXIMA (God is near) are written on the tablets in the same way as the Commandments should be displayed, with three letters on one side and seven on the other.
