Flyer created by the Committee Against Fort Apache, a community coalition started in The Bronx by longtime community activists Richie Perez, Dr. Evelina Antonetty, and others in order to contest the production of Fort Apache, The Bronx, a Time Life movie released in 1981. This movie dealt in many of the worst racist, classist, and sexist stereotypes of the borough, depicting all of its characters of color as in some way socially degenerate. Various community groups in The Bronx rose up to protest the making and release of the movie. Although ultimately the movie was released, the Committee Against Fort Apache focused on raising the consciousness of people in The Bronx to take pride in their own communities and cultures. This robust tradition of community grassroots activism in The Bronx played into the full emergence of hip hop around this same time.
