Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, Netherlands

The plain jug and cups on view here were used in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam, one of four churches built in the city for Protestant worship during the first half of the 17th century. Protestants repudiated what they felt
was the sinful, ostentatious display of wealth in the Catholic Church. They favoured highly austere objects
even for the solemn celebration of communion.
