Eileen loved to paint birds and though this painting is an obvious depiction of crows in a tree and nesting environment, it was more than that to Eileen. As her title suggests, it is a composition in black and gold. While depicting representational subject matter, she was particularly concentrating on the development of the painting’s composition utilizing the predominant colors of black for the crows and gold for the foliage. The painting exemplifies Eileen’s approach to a composition, working all over the watercolor paper simultaneously, blending and weaving together. The painting won an award at the competitive exhibition of the San Diego County Exposition in 1975.
