In the 1970s, Ungno's Abstract Letter series underwent a stylistic change as he developed a new form showing clear contours and composition. Diverging from the beauty of his 1960s’ works, with their pale and stained colours of old gravestones, his 1970s’ works presented a dramatic use of primary colours and exploration with different mediums. Ungno explored a multitude of mediums, including coarse and thin linen, thick cotton, light synthetic fibre, shiny vinyl and glittering aluminium pieces; he added pigments to or cut such mediums with scissors. This work expresses the letter-like forms whose outlines are distinct; its use of dazzlingly pure colour, in particular, emphasizes the sleek surface of vinyl.
