Composition of a after-hunt in a Medici vase

The painting, elegantly and accurately executed, shows a composition of afterhunting with a Medici vase, according to the fashion, very common in the Netherlands between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, of still-lifes with hunting trophies. On the other hand, the presence, in the center, of the body of a large hare with white belly and hind legs spread apart, which occupies the canvas diagonally, is unusual. The rifle, on the left, forms a triangle with the hare and rests on a rich net bag and another prey, on the right, with half-open wings, still seems throbbing with life. The vase on the bottom, a symbol of artistic refinement and wealth, supports the gun, but also has a decorative function: the lion carved in bas-relief within a medallion of the amphora stretches a paw towards the hare as if to hold it vigorously. A thin nasturtium plant with a yellow flower wraps around the vase in a naturalistic and studied way. The artwork shows, although difficult to read, in the lower left corner, the interwoven figures of the artist, "D V", and the date of creation, 1701.
